Pregnancy Yoga, Playlist + Poetry
I have the absolute pleasure and privilege to share the practise of pregnancy yoga with lovely Mamas to be in the North Devon area and i absolutely love it.
Not only because i’m able to share the wonderful benefits of moving your body mindfully, but also being able to offer a safe space to share and connect with other likeminded women going through this incredible life changing journey.
Pregnancy is the beginning of the journey into motherhood and you are changing not only physically but mentally as well, facing fears, questioning belief systems, forging a path towards parenting and importantly finding your own way of doing things.
Yoga helps us to find a connection to breath alongside our ever changing form. The breath acts as an anchor to calm and to focus on the here and now. The sound and the sensation helps us to tune inwards instead of out and find awareness in the letting go of tension and anxiety.
If you have had trouble sleeping during pregnancy (most people do at some point) you will have probably noticed how easy it is for your mind to spiral into worry…..
Have i got everything i need? What if xyz happens? Do i need a different size of nappies just in case? Should i clean the washing machine out before i wash the baby clothes? Do i need a baby bath? Shall i get my hair done? Maybe my nails? What if i never get to go out again? Can i do this? What if i can’t? What am i doing?
I have been there. You are not alone. You are strong and you are capable and you can do this. With simple breath work and movement tools as well as a secure support system we can find our way through the more challenging times in pregnancy.
Your breath mirrors your state of being. So when you find yourself feeling anxious turn to your breath. Slow your breath down, sigh the breath out of your mouth. Try counting to 4 on the inhale and 5 on the exhale, when this feels comfortable try 4 on the inhale then 6 on the exhale, then in for 4 out for 7, then finally in for 4 out for 8. And continue for as long as you’re happy to to find a sense of calm.
This simple breath technique can help you to stay calm throughout pregnancy, birth and beyond.
Using a mantra is also super helpful to focus the mind and when your thoughts are racing-
“My baby and my body are healthy and strong”
“Everything is unfolding as it should be”
“This too shall pass”
There is a lot of focus in pregnancy on birth in particular and we do work on this during pregnancy yoga classes but birth is just the beginning of motherhood……being able to tap into your breath, move your body well and become more mindful + less reactive will support you throughout the stages of motherhood- whether its feeding, tiredness, toddlers or teenagers.
Here is a link to my favourite playlist for Pregnancy Yoga Class featuring a beautiful Savasana song called Returning by Jennifer Berezen and i know has been helpful during birth for quite a few women- including me!
Homecoming by Matrescent Muse is one of my favourite quotes to end the pregnancy yoga class and an important reminder when you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the change ahead, that your baby has been with you throughout the pregnancy and is already at home with you now.
